Finding Great Health Care

Using Counseling Services To Meet Your Mental Health Care Needs

by Fred Davidson

Mental health problems are very common issues that people experience. While these issues can be highly unpleasant and very disruptive, there are many misconceptions and assumptions about psychiatric counseling services, and these beliefs may be sufficient to cause a person to fail to utilize these treatment options.

Assumption: It Is Always Obvious When A Person Is Suffering From Anxiety Or Depression Problems

Depression and anxiety are two of the more common mental health issues that people will experience. Unfortunately, individuals will frequently have the belief that it is always obvious when someone is suffering from depression or anxiety. In reality, these symptoms can manifest themselves in many different ways. While individuals may assume that depression always results in a person feeling overwhelmingly sad or that anxiety feels like panicking, the reality can be more complex. For example, it can be common for individuals that are suffering from these issues to experience a general sense of lethargy, disinterest in things they used to like, or an increase in the difficulty of focusing.

Assumption: Counseling Services Will Be Very Awkward For The Patient

Not surprisingly, individuals that have little previous experience with counseling services can often be unsure as to what this experience will involve. Commonly, individuals may assume that this therapy session will be fairly awkward for them. In reality, the counselor will be able to assist you with processing the various problems or challenges that you may be facing. This type of setting can be invaluable for allowing individuals to deconstruct their options and to understand the ways that their past traumas may be impacting their assessment of the situation. By allowing you the freedom to talk through and explore these issues, your therapist can provide valuable support.

Assumption: A Psychiatric Counseling Session Will Be Time-Consuming

Some individuals may appreciate the value of receiving psychiatric counseling, but they may not utilize this service due to the assumption that it will be very disruptive and time-consuming. Fortunately, most psychiatric counseling sessions will last around an hour, and they may only be needed every week or two. Additionally, modern counseling services may utilize teleconferencing or other remote care options to allow individuals to attend these sessions without having to take the time or effort to drive to the clinic to meet with the counselor in person. For those that live far from these care providers, this can be a very important option.
