4 Ways To Make Your Infusion Therapy More Comfortable

by Fred Davidson

Infusion therapy is a popular way to treat a variety of alignments, from arthritis to irritable bowel disease. With infusion therapy, you are given biologics via an IV instead of getting your medication via a pill form. Infusion therapy takes place in a variety of settings, from a doctor's office to a hospital. If you are going in for your first infusion therapy, no matter the reason, there are a few tips that will help make the experience more comfortable.

Hydrate Ahead of Time

Your infusion is going to be a lot easier if you are well-hydrated. When you are well-hydrated, it will be easier for the nurses to find a vein so they can set up your IV. You can't just drink a bunch of water on your way to the office. You need to drink a lot of water in the two days before you go in. Starting about 48 hours before your appointment, start increasing the amount of liquid that you are drinking. Try to stick to water, not other liquids. The easier it is for the nurse to get the IV in, the easier your treatment will feel for you.

Bring a Snack with You

When you get an infusion, you are essentially taking medication. You want to make sure your body is ready to take that medication. You should eat on your regular schedule before you go in for your infusion. You should also bring a healthy snack with you. A healthy snack will help you avoid feelings of lightheadedness and nausea that often accompany an infusion. Low blood sugar is a common side effect as well, so make sure the snack you choose will help you keep up your blood sugar as well.

Dress Comfortably

You are going to want to dress in clothing that you are going to feel comfortable in. Do not worry about looking fashionable or professional. You will have to sit for a while the medication goes into your bloodstream. It is perfectly acceptable to wear pajamas, legging, or even sweatpants. You want to make sure you will be comfortable.

Bring Some Entertainment

The process of getting an infusion is not a short process. The entire process can take hours. Be sure to bring things with you that will keep you entertained.

If you bring your cell phone, tablet, or computer, make sure it is charged up before you leave for your appointment. Bring headphones so you don't disturb others with what you are watching or listening to. Bring a few other items as well, such as a book, an adult coloring book, or some cards. You are going to have to stay in the same place for an extended time, so be sure you have something to do.

When you must go for an infusion, drink lots of water in the days before the infusion. Bring a healthy snack with you to your treatment. Dress comfortably and bring some entertainment. Doing these things will make your treatments go more smoothly and will make the time more enjoyable for you.
