Vaccinations And Adults

by Fred Davidson

When it comes to vaccines, you may assume they only need to be administered during childhood. However, while routine vaccinations during childhood are very important, you also want to make sure that you are protected as an adult as well. Some vaccinations require a booster during adulthood. Other vaccines, such as the flu vaccine, are recommended once per year. There may even be vaccines available now that weren't available when you were a child. Here are three things that you should consider when it comes to vaccinations during adulthood.

The Vaccinations you Need

Getting vaccinated as an adult does require some work on your part. If you weren't vaccinated as a child, it's important to get caught up and make sure that you have your basic immunizations. Other vaccines may need to be administered depending on your circumstances. If you are traveling, you may need vaccinations for typhoid, yellow fever, Japanese Encephalitis, and other diseases. In other cases, certain vaccines may be needed even if you aren't traveling. For adults, tetanus/diphtheria boosters are recommended every 10 years after receiving the vaccination. Young adults, both male and female, should also consider getting the HPV vaccine.

Cost

Another thing to consider when it comes to vaccinations is the cost. The cost of vaccinations can vary depending on the vaccines needed. The vaccines required during childhood and adolescence cost an average of $1,170. Flu shots, which are recommended every year for adults cost between $5 and $30 on average. Vaccinations for traveling can range in price from $50 to over $1,000 depending on where you are traveling and how many vaccinations you need. A tetanus/diphtheria booster is something that most adults need and costs between $25 and $60 on average.

Age is a Factor

When it comes to vaccinations, age can be a factor. You often require different vaccines at different parts of your life. It's recommended that adults age 60 years and older get the vaccination for shingles. If you are over the age of 65, a pneumococcal vaccination is recommended. Depending on your needs, health, and age, you may also require vaccines for chickenpox, hepatitis A, measles, mumps, rubella, and more. As an adult, you should look through previous immunization records and work with your doctor to determine which vaccines are needed. You can also visit a family health clinic for vaccinations.

When it comes to vaccines as an adult there are a few things you should know. Vaccinations are still needed into adulthood. Costs can vary depending on the vaccines needed and whether or not you have health insurance. Age can also be a factor. As you go through adulthood, your vaccination needs can change.
